Commencement Address

#4This Commencement address really cracked me up. After I was through reading it I had to give it to my brother to read. He just graduated high school so I knew he would laugh too. Being a comedian allows Jon Stewart to speak on traditional commencement themes in unexpected ways. If he is funny and talks about serious stuff, that is sort of the ice breaker. I do not know too many people who can get mad at someone who is joking about life. Being funny also makes a speech like that not boring. You listen attentively to the speaker and perhaps interact if possible.I thought the address was meaningful. It allowed me to think about my life in terms of me grading college in a year. He says "College is not necessarily predictive of your future success. So how do you know what is the right path to choose to get the result that you desire? The honest answer is this: You won't. And accepting that realty eases the anxiety of your life experience".That is very true to me. I have so many things that I could go off and accomplish with my fashion degree. I would spend way too much time trying to figure out exactly, down to the smallest detail, where my life is going. I guess you could say I am a bit compulsive but I think that life is too short to waist time. I have an idea on the direction of where it should be. Do I know exactly how to get there? Nope and that scares me.Traditionally for my line of work, if you do not get an internship somewhere, it is much harder to jump into an entry level position. Most internships are not paid. So let us pretend I did get an internship in New York. How do you survive unless you have tons of money saved, fortunate enough to have a wealthy family who would help you out, or just be a street walker at night? I am not so sure yet, but I am working on that one. Somehow downtown Birmingham or Royal Oak may have the answers I am looking for at the moment. More to come...Amway’s, Stewart also says "College is something you complete. Life is something you experience. So don't worry about your grade, or the results, or success. Success is defined in myriad ways, and you will find it, and people will no longer be grading you, but it will come from your own internal sense of decency, which I imagine, is quite strong...Love what you do. Get good at it". To me a desire he is expressing by offering this modern interpretation of the past is that not to sweat the small stuff. A theme everyone spoke on while I was in New York was love what you do. Not one person from day one mentioned money. It was "Love what you do" "Be an expert in your field because you enjoy it", how funny that he also says that. Really just care about what you will be doing for the rest of your life. Do not make things harder then what they are. It sort of reminds me of that Tim McGraw song- Live like you were dyinghttp://www.lyrics007.com/Tim%20McGraw%20Lyrics/Live%20Like%20You%20Were%20Dying%20Lyrics.html
